The clients, currently residing in San Francisco, CA, contacted us to design a renovation/addition to an existing farmhouse in North Carolina. The existing house, constructed in 1923, embodies sentimental value and family history. However, given its current state, a new house is proposed. The proposed house takes its cues from the existing house. The proposed house replicates, without copying, the original structure. General locations of rooms/spaces are retained while clearly defining the public and private portions of the house. The main concept of the house is a large open-plan public space. The intent of the new house is to provide modern living in a contemporary farmhouse while recalling the memories of the original home and acknowledging its past history.
